Frequently Asked Questions
We know for some of you this is the first time you are coming to an arangetram. This is potentially the first time you have seen Indian classical dance. We are so glad you are coming!
We have put together some answers to frequently asked questions that will hopefully help you feel comfortable and part of the community.
What is an arangetram?
Arangetram (in Tamil and in Malayalam, known as "Rangapravesha" in Kannada and "Rangapravesham" in Telugu) is the debut on-stage performance of a former student of Indian classical dance and music that follows years of training in classical music and dancing.
Do I need a ticket to attend the arangetram?
You are invited as a welcomed guest of the dancer, guru, school or family. No ticket is needed.
What should I wear?
An arangetram is a dance recital. Wear whatever you might wear to a classical dance, ballet, or music recital. If formal evening wear is typical or suitable to you, then you are welcome to wear it. If you want to wear Indian clothing, you are welcome to wear those.
Is it appropriate to bring a gift for the dancer?
Your attendance is gift enough, however if you want to bring a small token, Kalyani loves books, musicals, and anything shiny and sparkly. Whatever you would bring to a graduation would be appropriate for the occasion and received with gratitude.
Will there be a guest book to sign?
Yes. Please make sure to leave a few words of advice or encouragement for Kalyani.
How long will the performance be?
From beginning to end the arangetram will run approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. There is no intermission, so you are welcome to take any breaks needed in between dances.
Anyone who cannot sit through a long performance is welcome to attend via the livestream that will be broadcast through the page linked at the top of this page.
Do anangetrams typically start on time?
Yes, so please allow time to mingle a little before the performance. Seating will begin at 3:00 with the performance starting at 3:30.
Is it OK to clap during the performance?
Yes, if you are moved, amazed, or otherwise motivated to cheer, feel free to do so.
How can I know the meanings of the dances?
Under the program section of this website we have the meanings of the dances listed for each dance. You can look them up before the show or follow along during the performance.
Can I take photos/video?
Absolutely! Just please keep the flash off so as not to disturb the performers. We will provide a link for sharing any media you have to share.
Can I see Kalyani after the show?
You are welcome to come on stage after the show to greet Kalyani. There will be some photos being taken etc. but we will all be happy to greet you.
Will there be any food or drinks?
